Triads & Seventh Chords

Return to: MUSC 115

 Work on the following Computer-Assisted Instructon (CAI) exercises as described in the CAI Activity #2 assignment posted in Blackboard.

1. Key Signature ID
• If necessary, return to the CAI Activity #1 Exercises and work on Key Signature ID.
2. Scale Spelling and ID
• If necessary, return to the CAI Activity #1 Exercises and work on Major Scale Spelling & ID and Minor Scale Spelling & ID.
  
3. Chord Spelling & ID
   • Teoria
     • Ex. 1.1: Triad Construction {Teoria}
       Given a notated root and chord type (M, m, A, or d), notate the triad in root position.
       
       
     • Ex. 1.2: Seventh Chord Construction {Teoria}
       Given a notated root and chord type (MM, Mm, mm, dm, or dd), spell the seventh chord in root position.
       
       
     • Ex. 1.3: Triad ID {Teoria}
       Given a triad, identify the quality as M, m, A, or d.
       
       
     • Ex. 1.4 Seventh Chord ID {Teoria}
       Given seventh chord, identify the quality as MM, Mm, mm, dm, or dd.

   • Ex. 1.5 Triad and Seventh Chord ID {MT.net}
     Given notated chord, identify the quality of the chord as M, m, A, d, Mm, MM, mm, dm, or dd.
     
     
   • Ex 1.6. Piano Keyboard Chord ID {MT.net} - optional
     Given root position chord as keys play on the piano, identify the quality of the chord as M, m, A, d, Mm, MM, mm, dm, or dd.

   • You can check chord spellings using MusicTheory.net's Chord Calculator {MT.net}
   • If you find chord spelling and ID to be difficult, you will want to take a step back a step and practice Interval Spelling {Teoria} and/or Interval ID {Teoria}. For example, here are two good interval drills on MusicTheory.net:

4. Roman Numeral Spelling & ID
   • Teoría
     • Ex. 2.1 Roman Numeral ID
       Given a chord and a key (major or minor), identify the scale degree (as an upper-case Roman numeral) and chord type.
       • A. Triad ID {Teoria}: M, m, A & d
       • B. Seventh Chord ID {Teoria}: MM, Mm, mm, dm & dd

       Ex. 2.2: Roman Numeral Spelling {Teoria}
       Given a notated scale degree (as an upper-case Roman numeral) and a scale (major or minor), spell the triad associated with that scale degree
       Work in root position only. Limit key signatures to 4 accidentals. Practice the major scale first. Then try natural minor, harmonic minor and melodic minor.
