Analytical Commentary
Like Examples 4 & 6, this phrase incorporates the PD function. In this phrase, however, IV serves as the PD rather than ii. In m. 1, notice how the ornamental passing tones help to prolong tonic harmony. Finally, notice the embedded phrase model (EPM) within the tonic expansion. The chord progression I IV viio6 I is a small-scale T-PD-D-T motion. Although we do not want you to mark EPMs yet, we do want you to notice them. {Chorale 117, mm. 1-2}
